Makeup FAQs & Myths Debunked | Leatty Beauty Masterclass

Published for the upcoming Leatty Beauty Makeup Masterclass

As we count down to class day, I’m answering the most common questions students send me (and the beauty myths that just won’t die). Bookmark this post, share it with a friend, and come ready to practice these tips live!

Most‑Asked Questions

1. How do I pick the exact right foundation shade?

Start by identifying your skin’s undertone: veins that look blue‑purple suggest a cool undertone, greenish veins point to warm, and a mix likely means neutral. Once you know that, swatch two or three candidate shades along your jawline in natural daylight—the one that “disappears” into both face and neck wins.

2. Concealer before or after foundation?

Most artists (and I) recommend foundation first—it evens the canvas so you’ll need less concealer and creates a seamless blend. But for heavy color‑correction or studio shoots, applying a corrector or concealer under foundation can work better.

3. My mascara always smudges under my eyes. Help!

Keep under‑eyes hydrated, set concealer with a light dusting of translucent powder, and use a waterproof mascara to resist smudging.

4. How do I prep dry lips for matte lipstick so it doesn’t crack?

Gently exfoliate with a lip scrub (2 or 3 times a week), apply a hydrating balm, blot away excess, then apply your Liquid Matte Lipstick. A lip primer can add extra longevity and smoothness.

5. What really makes makeup last from breakfast to bedtime?

Think prime, set, and seal.

6. How (and how often) should I clean my brushes?

Spot‑clean after use if you work on multiple faces; for personal kits, deep‑clean weekly with brush soap/cleanser. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water, reshape bristles, and dry flat or with bristles angled downward so water doesn’t seep into the ferrule and loosen glue.

Myths We’ll Shatter in Class

Myth Reality
“Daily makeup ruins your skin.” Not if you remove it thoroughly and stick to a good skincare routine.
“Makeup doesn’t expire.” Every product has a shelf life. Expired formulas can irritate skin and eyes.
“Primer is pointless.” Primers act like double‑sided tape for makeup and improve longevity—especially on oily or sweaty skin.
“Concealer must always go after foundation.” Order depends on coverage goals; both sequences are valid techniques.
